#BEDM Day 7 - Gadgets

Day 7 of Rosalilium’s 'Blog Every Day in May' Challenge

Today's theme is all about gadgets - now the other day I was stood waiting for dinner to cook, perusing Bloglovin on my tablet (a Kobo Arc if you're interested) and it suddenly struck me that the one of the places in the home that's seen the most change gadgetry-wise is the kitchen.

When my nana and grandmum set up their own homes in 1952 and 1955, the only gadget they owned was a oven.

Cooker
Obviously not this particular one...

Clothes were washed by hand and dried on the line, food was kept fresh in the larder and meat safes, all bread was made by hand and there was no such thing as a microwave ready meal.

Fast forward 60 years and what do I have in my mine?

A selection of devices that reach double figures - you can tick off the list a breadmaker, a mixer, a food processor, a health grill, a fridge freezer, another small freezer, a digital/FM radio CD player, a toaster, a kettle, a microwave, a dishwasher (albeit one that doesn't work - my handyman has been rather slack...), a washing machine and a tumble dryer.

21st century kitchen gadgets

If my grandmothers were still alive, I think they'd be amazed!

  1. What an interesting take on the topic! So much has changed indeed. At my mum's house, we still don't have a dishwasher and when other's find out, they act as if we live in the Middle Ages. We depend on machinery so much at this age, it's hard to imagine how it was some years back.

    1. It's so strange to think that it was only within a couple of generations that things were dramatically different - I don't know what I'd do without some of my gadgets nowdays! :-) x

  2. I adore your matching kettle and toaster - what a beautiful bright yellow! I think me and my o/h sit quite low on the scale as we only really have a kettle and microwave - and a fancy oven I'm still learning to use... x

  4. I am so grateful to live in this era and in such a wealthy country. I can't begin to imagine how rubbish life must've been in the days before vacuums, ovens, and fridges; let alone healthcare products like deodorants, medicines, and feminine hygiene products!! xxx

    1. I know, it seems like a completely different world, yet was only 70 or so years ago! :-) xxx
