This Weekend at the Duckpond

We have mostly been...

Cooking - lots and lots of food ready for a picnic on Sunday at the Mid Somerset Show. We usually do baked potatoes cooked in a steam engine but this year we thought we'd have a change and go for pie, tortilla, savoury nibbles and (of course) lots of cake.

Sausage and Tomato Chutney Rolls

Using - up some blackberries and raspberries from the freezer that were actually picked from last September.

Raspberries and blackberries

Erecting - a gate and then painting the fence that's mounted to the gate structure. Obviously Andrew did all that, I just supplied the tea and bits of food that went wrong during the cooking process!

Fence-making

Participating - in Jane's (from Is That You Darling) photo an hour challenge on Saturday. Round up to follow tomorrow!

Eating - more food than I really needed at a BBQ on Saturday night. The people who run the vintage vehicle field at the Mid Somerset Show hold a little party the night before and we ended up having hog rolls, sweet and sour chicken, hot dogs and lots of cheese. Andrew had all that plus faggots, a burger and a Danish pastry to finish!

BBQ Food

Warming - ourselves up with a fire in a log. I'm sure they must have a fancy name or something but for the moment, it's just 'fire in a log'.

Meeting - several friends at the show on Sunday. Plus lots of friends of the human variety as well.

Ducks

Enjoying - the sunshine when it finally appeared at the show along with all the fabulous exhibits. If you like cheese, you would've definitely been in some kind of cheesy heaven in one of the tents!

An A-Z of Me - F

An A-Z of Me - F

Family History - Researching family history is one of my favourite hobbies, I bought this book (from Trago Mills in Liskeard, no less) when I was 9 and that was what got me started. Obviously it's a heck of a lot easier nowadays with the internet and sites like Ancestry and GenesReunited but the thrill of receiving a historical birth, death or marriage certificate through the post is still there!
The furthest we've got back is to about 1770 on one of my mother's lines but there's been many a dead end and wild goose chase along the way. The huge bonus with researching your ancestors is that it's something you can do for a while, forget about for a few years and then pick it up again whenever you like!

Fairgrounds - The colours, the lights, the showman's engines, the vintage lorries, the living vans, the lettering, the artwork, the travelling life, the screams and the thrill of it all - what's not to love?

Fringe Festival - My favourite holiday of the year, Edinburgh during festival season is complete madness but I love it!

Fifties - I reckon this has to be my favourite decade - very much tied in with fairgrounds and the type of dresses which suit me perfectly! One of the prompts during Blog Every Day in May was all about your favourite decade so you can read more about why I like the fifties here if you fancy.

Fringe (of the hair variety) - I had a fringe (a very 80s straight across cut) til I was about 9. I hated it. Consequently I haven't had a fringe since.

What 'F' things sum you up?

52 Lists - Things You Can See Right Now

52 Lists - Things You Can See

So as of about 2pm on Saturday afternoon, I can see...

My phone playing Arcade Fire on repeat
Several recipes still to cook
One batch of sausage and tomato chutney rolls cooked
Half a batch of Ulster scotch eggs cooked
The ingredients on the kitchen side ready to make a Spanish omelette/tortilla thingy
Raspberries and blackberries defrosting in a bowl
An ever-increasing amount of washing up to do

What can you see right now?

Here Is The News #6

Here is the News

Blogland Brilliance

The other half of Monday's Blog Hop, the absolutely lovely Katie from Hook Line and Sink Her has some excellent blog hop answers.

Rachel from Dear Ms Leigh shows us round her fabulous record room in her new house.

Chelsea celebrated her second wedding anniversary last week - pop over and wish the lovely lady a big congratulations :-)

Lily's workplace was gate-crashed last week by the legendary Bristol pie-makers Pieminister which meant...free pies! If you fill in the form on Pieminister's website they might just come to your workplace as well.

Exciting Events

We're off with the lorry to our local agricultural show on Sunday - the Mid Somerset Show. It's a fantastic event; free entry, a whole host of cheese/vegetable/cake type competitions, animal displays and plenty of free bits of food.

If we weren't at that show though, I quite like the look of the Lacock at War Show!

Also Jane's photo an hour challenge for August falls this on Saturday. I'll be instagramming and tweeting my pictures all day if you fancy following along and if you fancy joining in, great! Just use the hashtag #photoanhour

Interesting Info

It might just be another false alarm but apparently Edinburgh panda Tian Tian is finally pregnant (and it's probably a bit weird but us infertiles have a strange kind of affinity with Tian Tian so I'm quite pleased for her!)

Bath's historic Cleveland Pools received a huge boost to their renovation campaign this week. It's Britain's only surviving Georgian Lido and they're actually getting some lottery cash to restore them to their former glory - I think that's excellent news!

Life Lessons

Teach yourself all about regional accents and dialects with the British Library (down 'ere, we call a bread roll a 'roll' or 'bun' and a 'batch' is a slag heap from the Somerset coalfields)

And I'm probably way behind everyone else with this but did you know you can read back issues of magazines for free with Issuu? Some of them are just previews but if you hunt a little bit, there's quite a few whole issues on there for free. So far I've spotted Oh Comely, The Simple Things, various Mollie Makes and lots of home and house magazines. I know, I know, I'm sure everyone already knows about this but I got ever so excited when I realised what was on there!

Have you spotted anything interesting this week?

Blog Hop

The other week I was very kindly invited to take part in the Blog Hop that's been doing the rounds. Although I've done quite a few tag posts, I've never done a hop before and this one is all about writing and blogging with questions that I've never actually stopped to think about before.

So a huge thank you to Zoe from Floral and Feather for nominating me. Zoe's blog was one of the first ones I followed a couple of years ago and then when I started this little piece of the internet, she was the first person to comment on here, only 5 days after I launched duck in a dress. I was so excited by that one comment - it was like getting a comment from a celebrity!

Zoe's other Blog Hop nominee is the fabulous Katie from over at Hook Line and Sink Her - someone who's truly lovely online and in real life and always manages to make me smile with her comments and blog posts!

So on to the questions...

Why do I write?
Okay, so the answer probably is 'I don't really know'. Not a good start to the questions.
When I was a kid, I remember making lists, keeping diaries, filling up notepads, writing my own books and even me and a friend trying to launch our own local newspaper. When I grew older, I loved all things literary and language-y (yup, I'm creating that word) but other than coursework, never sat down to actually write anything and be creative.
People kept telling me my life was kind of cool but I didn't really believe them (and I wasn't going to start putting rubbish on Facebook just to see who was right). Keeping a blog though means that you can share things with the world and if people are interested, then they can choose to read and if they do, then that's excellent.
I think it's something to do with leaving a kind of documentary record of what I've done with my life. I really enjoy taking pictures and thinking what to write about what we've done; and I really love the blogging community - the lovely people, the comments and all the things you learn from other bloggers.
Does that make any kind of sense?

What am I working on?
Blogwise: I really need to be a bit more active on Twitter and actually remember to take part in Twitter chats. I'd also like to learn to take better photographs, the whole 'framing a picture' sort of thing. I've always loved snapping away at things and also run a photography site with pictures of Somerset's Carnival processions but pretty much all the shots are of moving things. Of course, with an action shot you can't really take time to make the picture perfect so my experience of taking gorgeous pictures is rather limited!
Elsewhere in our lives: a change of bedrooms (complete with new furniture), a car port on the side of the house sheltering a vintage lorry, a Masters degree and maybe one day, a little duckling.

How does it differ from others of its genre?
It probably doesn't, as duck in a dress is *just* another lifestyle blog. The only difference to other lifestyle blogs is that naturally every blogger has their own eclectic interests and this means I end up blogging about steam rallies, IVF, theatre, Carnivals, vintage vehicles, cake and charity shops. In all the years I spent reading other people's blogs, I never stumbled on another one with quite that range of bizarre hobbies.

Duck in a Dress Hobbies

How does my writing process work?
Well, it's not as organised as I'd like it to be! I keep a loose schedule on Google Calendar of what I'm doing when and what to post about then I try and write down some thoughts a few days in advance of when I want stuff published. Lunch breaks at work are very useful although I quite often end up ignoring Andrew in the evening because I'm tapping away on the laptop.
I try and reply to comments at the weekend but as you might have noticed, it doesn't always happen!

So there you have it, my Blog Hop answers. Now the idea of the blog hop is to nominate two other beautiful bloggers except umm...went-on-holiday-for-a-week-and-forgot-to-email-anyone...yeah, that.

I will be sending off a couple of quick messages though and hopefully in a few days, I'll have two nominees eagerly waiting to publish their own blog hop posts next Monday.

I'll let you know who they are as soon as I find out myself! :-)

This Weekend at the Duckpond

We have mostly been...

Watching - several shows on Friday and one on Saturday morning in Edinburgh, finishing off a fabulous five days at the Fringe Festival.

Tickets for an Edinburgh Fringe show

Travelling - down from up north, a journey of about 8 and half hours involving 3 trains and a 2 hour stop in Manchester. It could've been a quicker trip on a direct train but that would've been about 4 times the price I paid!

Unpacking - all the stuff from our holiday in Edinburgh.

Fixing - a 1963 Scammell Highwayman lorry. Well, me and the mother-in-law just provided the audience while Andrew, his dad and a friend fixed the wiring. It's one of the lorries owned by Carters Steam Fair and after a couple of phone calls on Sunday morning, we found ourselves heading into Bath complete with toolbox to help out a friend.

Riding - on some of the attractions owned by Carters Steam Fair. Payment for fixing the lorry came in the form of a few free rides!

52 Lists - Things You Wish You'd Known As A Teenager

Duck in 1997

Your BFF's?
They won't stick around (but it's okay, you'll find new ones).

Think you're fat? Unattractive? Unfashionable?
You're certainly not overweight or that unattractive (the outfits are possibly a bit quirky but you'll be able to carry them off with confidence in the future).

All those hobbies you have that other people think are sad?
Give it 10-15 years and you'll be well cool.

That whole idea that you jump in the sack with someone and wham, you're pregnant?
Yeah, you don't need to worry about that.

Think you'll grow out of those spots on your face?
Hah, think again (and a quick visit to the library to research something called PCOS wouldn't go amiss).

That lunchtime 'fun' job you have in the school library?
That's actually the career you need to follow.

Above all though, whatever happens remember you'll be fine.
Stuff might seem like an absolute disaster at the time but it happens for a reason and if it didn't, you wouldn't end up the person you are today.
