Just a few miles along the road from us is a real hidden gem of a town. Frome (pronounced Froome) is fast rising in those league tables of 'coolest places to live in the UK' with an eclectic mix of shops, markets, entertainment venues and local heroes such as Jenson Button (who turned on the Christmas lights this year), Pearl Lowe, Cara Dillion and Kevin McCloud. One thing that's helped the town on it's rise upwards is the monthly Frome Super Market.
On the first Sunday of each month the high street is closed to traffic and most of the town filled with stalls and sellers and last Sunday was the town's grand Christmas Super Market which we popped along to.
It gets incredibly busy when the markets are on so they'd laid on a free (but donations preferred) park and ride minibus from the local health centre about a mile away to the town centre. We parked up and luckily there was a bus just leaving so we got into town pretty quickly. In the main car park there was a vintage market, food stalls and children's entertainment area while in the town's Cheese and Grain venue there were stalls selling handmade goods and crafts. The high street was lined with all sorts of market stalls plus a main music stage and along Frome's Catherine Hill area was a suitcase market with sellers trading their wares from opened cases.
I took quite a lot of pictures but a lot of them ended up being mainly of people as it was just so busy!
Have you been to any vintage or Christmas markets this year?
What a cute vintage market - loving the look of a couple of those pink chairs that sneaked into one of your photographs, I could give those a new home given the chance!
ReplyDeleteThere was an awful lot we could've taken home with us (including those chairs!) - not too sure what we'd have done with it all though! :-) x
DeleteMy whole family are from Frome but no one knows where it is! I've also traped through loads of their markets in the pouring rain! But that one looks good :)
ReplyDeleteHa, small world! I think the markets in Frome have come on a lot in the last few years. I grew up the other side of Frome (just across the border into Wiltshire) and they never used to have such good markets back in the 80s and 90s! :-) x
DeleteOh my word - SO MUCH GOODNESS!! That deer with the bauble nose is brilliant :) And I could meet Kevin McCloud you say? That man certainly knows how to work a pink jumper :p xxx
ReplyDeleteYep, you sure could! He lives about a mile away from Frome itself! I loved the reindeer with the bauble nose as well - he was in a shop called 'Deadly is the Female' which is amazing selling all sorts of vintage amd 50s inspired dresses. :-) xxx
DeleteI used to work in Frome at the theatre there - it was such a lovely place, and I really miss it! (Although I don't miss the 45 minute drive every day).
ReplyDeleteThat sounds fab! I was always going to volunteer at the Memorial Theatre in Frome but never got round to it - one day maybe! :-) x
DeleteJensen Button, you say? Must make a trip to Froome...
ReplyDeleteThe market looks amazing. I love that it's such an event (and I love the Jemima Puddleduck print, too)!
Yep, he switched on the Christmas lights on the Friday night. We didn't get there in time from work unfortunately but from what I heard the place was rammed with people - mainly because he didn't just flick a switch, he also drove a Formula 1 car up and down the high street using it as a race track! :-) x
