A Walk on the Wild Side with Nakd Bars

Soooo, doing a review of products you've been sent - how do you start that sort of post then?

All the blogs I've seen usually go something along the lines of 'I was doing xyz stuff so when xyz company offered to send me xyz products I was really excited/pleased/any-variation-of-positive-adjective!'

Nakd Bars

Well, stuff that, the tale of how I came to be in possession of a box of (thankfully quite tasty) Nakd bars is as simple as I was approached by a lovely PR lady and asked would I like to try a box.

Interestingly it was actually a company I'd heard of already as they sell the bars in the shop on campus at my workplace; they're positioned in the bit where you queue to get to the tills and I've picked up a bar on more than one occasion and then put it down seeing that they contain nuts and even though I'm not allergic or anything, I'm just a nuisance and don't like them.

So my first response to the email was that I'd love to try them but I'm not sure about the amount of nuts - however I did have several eager and willing friends who'd love to help plus a hungry human dustbin in the shape of a husband.

Fast forward a week or so and a box of Nakd bars promptly arrived on my desk, quickly followed by a couple of starvin' marvin friends. Once they'd tasted their bars, I realised that the nuts were actually chopped up really small so I might like them after all (like I said, I'm just awkward, I'll eat tiny nuts chopped up but not anything larger).

Nakd Bars

Nakd Bars are produced by Natural Balance Foods; they've been around for 10 years with the aim of making healthy wholefood alternatives to processed food and I'm happy to report that all their bars are made in good old Blighty. The Nakd bars are simply raw fruit and nuts all mashed together with 100% natural ingredients - perfect for dairy, gluten and wheat free diets. I have a few friends who need things like this so I know how important it is to find tasty treats that fulfil all that criteria.
Oh, and even better, one Nakd bar counts towards your five a day!

Nakd Bars

There's 9 different flavours to choose from: Rhubard and Custard, Caffe Mocha, Cocoa Orange, Berry Delight, Cashew Cookie, Cocoa Delight, Ginger Bread, Cocoa Mint and Pecan Pie.

My lovely friend M tried the Cocoa Mint and here's what she had to say:
"delicious, satisfying, all the comfort of a mint club biscuit without the guilt!"

Andrew sampled the Ginger Bread:
"cinnamon-y, nutty and without the dryness you get from eating raw nuts"
(I've never eaten nuts on their own, so who knows what he was on about)

I tried the Cocoa Orange and was very pleasantly surprised, even though the packet says 40% cashews, they're chopped so small you don't notice them at all. It was very tasty, chocolately but not over-powering and bonus points for being only 145 calories.

The in laws tried the Cashew Cookie and Caffe Mocha and their response was:
"yum, very nice"
(well, they are in their 70s)

All in all, we found them rather good and it's nice to find a snack that's both tasty and healthy - next time I'm stood in the shop queue at work dithering whether to pick one up, I'll know what they're actually like!

Thanks Natural Balance Foods!

I was very kindly sent a free box of Nakd bars to review.
All words, opinions and photos are my own, the other half's, the in law's and my lovely friend M's.

This Weekend at the Duckpond

We have mostly been...

Laughing - at funnyman Danny Bhoy with his stand up show, 'Please Untick This Box' at Bristol's Colston Hall. I think he's one of the most under-rated comedians out there (and quite easy on the eye too...), it was the third time I've seen him (the first being about 10 years ago in Edinburgh) and he always leaves us crying with laughter. I reckon a good test of how funny a comedian is, is whether you spend the next few days repeating lines from the show at each other - so we've been quoting 'all birds are dicks' and 'ooh, I didn't know there'd be food!' all weekend. If you're looking for a fab stand up comedy show, please please please go see him!

Participating - in Jane's monthly photo an hour challenge on Saturday. Round up to follow tomorrow!

Confusing - the in laws with a mystery tour for father in law's 74th birthday. We'd planned it all in advance where we were taking them and all they knew was to keep the date free as they would be doing 'something'.

Riding - on the choo choo trains at Didcot Railway Centre, the mystery destination! The in laws have been meaning to visit for about 40 years and back in the summer Mr T's were doing 5x the value on their Clubcard deals so we cashed in some vouchers to take them on a big day out.

Munching - on a delicious piece of homemade cake from the little tea shop at the railway centre.

Treating - the in laws to a slap up dinner at Ed's Easy Diner in Swindon on the way home. What with the wallboxes on each table and the 50s/60s music, it's right up their street and we're fans of the place too. We played about half a dozen songs whilst chomping on a burger, fries and one of Ed's infamous milkshakes.

Exploring - Clifton Rocks Railway in Bristol, one of the venues open for the Heritage Open Days weekend. It's a fascinating place which was used for all sorts of things over the years, I'm going to do a proper review later in the week but it's definitely well worth a visit if you're ever in the area.

An A-Z of Me - H

A-Z of Me - H

Hot Chocolate - Ahh, my favourite drink. I've never been able to get used to the taste of coffee and I agree, you can't beat a good cup of cha but if there was a decent hot chocolate on offer, I'd take that, no questions asked.

Home - I really don't want to come across as old-fashioned or anything but I do actually like taking care of my own house. There's a certain sense of pride in having an organised (as well as lived-in) lovely home and I'd be the first to agree with the line that feminism isn't necessarily all about getting women out of the kitchen (for want of a better analogy), but instead is all about giving women the choice to do what they want.

Hairstyles - I'm incredibly bad at styling my hair; my default mode is the surfer girl look (aka the proverbial dragged-though-a-hedge-backwards look) and my morning routine when it comes to hair is: wash, dry naturally, brush. If I'm going somewhere smart, I might straighten it but anything more fancy just doesn't work. I've been told by hairdressers that my hair is quite thin which probably explains why it won't hold a curl or stay in any sort of intricate design.
And when it comes to getting my hair cut, I go about 2-3 times a year mainly when it gets too long or I've got some event I need to look good for. I just can't be bothered spending a fortune getting it done all the time!

Heirlooms - We seem to have a lot of inherited stuff in our house; a handmade rocking horse from the 1940s and a table skittles set from 1930s for example. Neither of us like throwing things away if they've still got a use so we seem to have amassed rather a large amount of stuff - the only thing is, we like collecting things ourselves and unfortunately our house isn't a bottomless pit!

Holidays - We don't own passports so all our holidays are in the UK or Ireland. When I was a kid, the top two places on my 'list of places to visit around the world' were Iceland and New York and I'd done them both by the age of 19 so for the moment, I'm not really that fussed about foreign holidays. I know there's still a whole heap of places in the UK that I still haven't visited so that's what we'll be doing for the next few years.

52 Lists - Things Which Bring You Comfort

52 Lists - Things Which Bring Me Comfort

Things which bring me comfort...hmm, well there's two sides to that methinks...

The bloggable version

Hot chocolate

A good hug

Books

(I bet you can just smell the cheesiness)

The non-bloggable version

Savings and a pension - neither of us want to be in a situation where it'd be a mad panic if we couldn't pay the mortgage

Stand up comedians - having other people make jokes about all the same things we find funny about society and other people's lives

Medical science and in particular the amazing staff at our fertility clinic - it really is a great comfort to know there's a team of people who are all doing their best on our behalf

What brings you comfort?
(the cutesy version or the honest version, either is fine!)

Here Is The News #10

Here is the News

Blogland Brilliance

Donna shared five top tips for finding bargains in charity shops.

Becky's post on how to write engaging blog content is really interesting, although I think I'm probably guilty of some of these.

Dudley went mud woogling and ended up one very mucky pup!

Elise had a quick trip to Blackpool and took some lovely pictues; we had a week there last year and although it might be run-down and a bit tacky, I love it anyway. Elise's post really makes me want to book another holiday there!

Exciting Events

Jane's Photo an Hour challenge for September falls on this Saturday - I'll be Instagramming my way through the day using the tag #photoanhour, feel free to join in, it's definitely the more the merrier!

This weekend is also Heritage Open Days weekend where thousands of historic venues fling open their doors (sometimes for free) and let you have a nosy. We're hoping to head off to Clifton Rocks Railway in Bristol on Sunday and may well take a look at some other places on the way.

Gemma's organising a Cardiff Bloggers Pre-Christmas Meet Up and Cream Tea on Sunday 26th October (open to everyone, not just Welsh bloggers). I haven't bought a ticket just yet, mainly because I wanted to see who else might be going but I'd love to go and even if I don't know anyone, I'm sure it'll be fine anyway. Although, Angela, Michelle, Chelsea, Lily, SJ, Sarah, Leona and Rachel - it'd be lovely to see you!

Interesting Info

Chocolate teapots apparently can be useful after all!

Photographer Oliver Hellowell takes stunning pictures of all sorts of birds and other wildlife; you can follow his Facebook page here (and he just happens to have Down's Syndrome as well...)

The Guardian wrote about how we're almost nearing our world growth limit. Back in the early 70s a book was published using scientific theories to predict that civilisation would collapse some time this century and funnily enough, the two sets of graphs (the estimates and the real life data) are spookily similar!

How many of these British seaside towns can you name?

This Week's Carnival...

Is actually two Carnivals - one in Colyton in Devon and one in Mere in Wiltshire.

Musical Magic

I don't even know how or what we were talking about to get onto the subject of 80s cartoon, Dogtanian and his Three Muskerhounds but once it was mentioned, we clicked over to the theme tune straightaway!

What's new with you?

This Weekend at the Duckpond

We have mostly been...

Gallivanting - in Cornwall staying with my sister in law. We booked our tickets for Kneehigh Theatre's show back in March and thought we'd just take our chances with the weather so it was quite the unexpected treat to get one last hot sunny weekend! We went off round Newquay town and Fistral Beach on Saturday morning and did Padstow on the way home on Sunday.

Eating - too much food, as always. Pizza Express (with Tesco vouchers) on Friday night, followed by a big breakfast, a pasty and a meal (and cake of course) at the show on Saturday night. Then Sunday was another breakfast, another pasty and on the way home we popped into Maccy D's for a McFlurry.

Dodging - the vultures! It always amazes me the amount of people who still walk around waving their ice creams and jumbo sausages in the air - although it does make for quite entertaining viewing!

Vulture Seagulls

Laughing - at this scrap man's van in Padstow and the very smiley graffiti in Newquay.

Crap Metal Dealer

Smiley Graffiti

Wandering - round The Lost Gardens of Heligan. I've never been there before but it was where Kneehigh had their show this summer so we bought a ticket that gave us entry to the gardens as well as the evening theatre show.

Blue Hydrangeas at The Lost Gardens of Heligan

Being - amazed by Kneehigh Theatre's latest show. It was actually the 22nd production of theirs I've seen (my first one was back in 1996) and they're still spectacular and magical even now!

52 Lists - Morning Weekday Routine

My weekday morning routine goes something like this...

7am - the alarm goes off blaring out Radio 2

7.01am - Andrew will hit the snooze button

7.15am - the alarm goes off again and I'll get up leaving lazybones in bed for another 15 minutes or so

7.20am - off to the bathroom to shower and wash

7.40am - I'll organise what I'm going to wear that day (usually a dress, you don't need to worry about colour-coordination then!) and Andrew will just be getting up

7.45am - he heads off to the bathroom to shower and shave while I make sure everything I need is in my handbag and try and slap some basic make-up on in an attempt to look presentable

7.55am - usually Andrew's downstairs by now and either getting some cereal organised or popping some bread in the toaster

8am - I'll come on downstairs, get my coat and shoes on and finish off making the tea and coffee in our travel mugs

8.05 or 8.10am - we set the burglar alarm and head on out the door for a day at work!

What's your morning weekday routine like?
