This Weekend at the Duckpond

We have mostly been...

Enjoying - listening to Mary Portas talk all about her new book, 'Shop Girl' at another Bath Literature Festival event. She was brilliant, really entertaining and talking a heck of a lot of common sense about shops, customer service and politics. I didn't buy the book but I have ordered it from the library instead.

Mary Portas at Bath Literature Festival

Learning - all about fashion during the Second World War at a talk given by Julie Summers to coincide with the new 'Fashion on the Ration' exhibition at the Imperial War Museum. Another excellent speaker and another book I've now got on order from the library.

Mooching - around Bath in the sunshine on Saturday afternoon. I had a few hours to kill between the Mary Portas talk at 11am and the Julie Summers talk at 3pm so I checked out a few charity shops and treated myself to a hot chocolate in the Guildhall Market.

Visiting - a building I've never been into, the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases (aka 'the Min' or 'the Mineral Hospital'). It's a fabulous old building which has been there in the centre of Bath for years and amazingly, is still used as a hospital today. They have a 'Mineral Museum' inside (which I didn't know they had) and that was being used as one of the venues for the Bath Literature Festival. We saw Tessa Dunlop talk all about her research on the Bletchley girls (again, she was such a good speaker and so enthusiastic!) and that's yet another book I've now reserved at the library.

Waiting - for Andrew to be seen by a doctor at the eye clinic of our local hospital. He woke up on Friday morning with a pain in one eye and his sight all blurred so it was off into Bath to see what was wrong. The short story is apparently nothing, they couldn't find anything wrong but they also couldn't explain it and have just told him to get some early nights, not watch too much TV and hopefully it'll get better. On the plus side, I did end up with Friday off work because of it!

Eating - a very colourful roast at out local Toby Carvery. The in laws took us out on Friday night after Andrew had left the eye clinic and treated us. It ended up being a weekend of eating out really as after we'd seen the Tessa Dunlop talk on Sunday we went to Pizza Express (with a Tesco voucher of course) and had pizza and pudding. They've put a chocolate cheesecake on their menu which is part of their Leggera range and under 250 calories and I can report that's it's rather tasty indeed!

What did you get up to at the weekend?

  2. Wow what a fun weekend! All those talks sound awesome. I trained in fashion originally and although I have no desire to work in the sector again I still love studying vintage designs and hearing about its history. Also I'm dying to visit Bath!

  3. I really like Mary Portas, must've been cool to hear talk. Yes! Fashion on the Ration! I've made a mental note of that exhibition, I reckon it's going to be ace.
