An A-Z of Me - C

An A-Z of Me - C

And on to the letter C...

Cushions - Personally I don't think there's such a thing as 'too many cushions', Andrew disagrees and says that there's no sofa left to sit on when there's a pile of cushions there.
It's one of those things we 'agree to disagree' on!

Crafting - I have a sewing machine, lots of fabric and lots of ideas - just not the time to actually do anything. I'd like to be a more crafty person but I'm hampered by the fact that I'm not very good at designing things from scratch; give me a set of instructions, a recipe or a dance routine and I can follow it perfectly but trying to do things off my own back = chaos!

Cakes - I know, I've already covered baking in 'B' but cakes are my bake of choice. I'm pretty much the resident cake baker at work, there's 14 birthdays in total across the year and other than my own, I make a cake for every person. I really enjoy the preparing and cooking part and I love it when people say they're really enjoying what I've made.

Comedy - This is what we'd always do on a date night. We both love stand up comedy and luckily both share the same sense of humour (the storytelling type if you're interested). I reckon about two thirds of our Edinburgh Fringe shows are comedy and I'm on the mailing lists for hundreds of comedians so I can book tour tickets the moment they go on sale. I used to watch BBC2's Stand Up Show late on Saturday nights in the 1990s and I'm sure that's where my love of it comes from.

Carnival - This and steam rallies pretty much rule our year, steam rallies in the summer and Carnivals in the autumn. Down here in Somerset, it's spelt with a capital C and it's a way of life for thousands of people with Bridgwater Carnival being the biggest illuminated Carnival in the world and able to trace it's roots back over 400 years. If you're imagining something like Rio or Notting Hill, it's nothing like that - the Somerset Carnival season is the UK's best kept secret and involves lots of 100ft long floats complete with 20-30 dancers (or still life tableaux) each lit by around 15-30,000 light bulbs and powered by massive megawatt generators.
It's also the reason I met Andrew!

Clothes - Apparently I have too many.

Charity Shops - Mainly because of these.

Charles Causley - Even though I loved English Literature at school, me and poetry just didn't get on. I'm still not keen now although I do have two poets whose work I actually enjoy, one of them being Charles Causley (the other is Edward Lear). He was a Cornish poet who only passed away about 10 years ago; he worked with Kneehigh Theatre Company quite a bit and I know that's why I like his stuff.

Cross Stitch - This was the first craft that I really got into, teaching myself how to do it when I was about 12. I loved the nature of it, the precise instructions and how tidy you could make it look both front and back. I did it quite a lot when I was younger but never seem to have time anymore. I even started a sampler back in 2002 to celebrate the Queen's Golden Jubilee, it's ever so neat and pretty but it's still (12 years on) only about a third finished.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh - I really like his work and have quite a few things of a similar design around the house. The Hill House in Helensburgh, Scotland is one of his most famous works and we used to live only a few miles away from that when I was a baby - that must have something to do with it, I'm sure!

Coffee - I'm weird. I like the taste of coffee flavour (coffee cake, coffee chocolates, etc) but can't stand the actual drink.

Children - Well, yep, you probably all know the score on this one.
I was once told years ago that there's two types of women; those who ooh and ahh over every little cute baby and those who say "yep, very nice" and then carry on with what they're doing (but absolutely love their own children). I'm definitely in the second camp - I don't consider myself a maternal person in the way society likes to see mothers but that's fine. I know I'd love my own if we ever get the chance to have them but if you meet me and want to pass me your baby to hold, I'd probably say "nah, you're alright!".

What 'C' things sum you up?

  1. I went in my MIL's car the other day and she has cushions ON THE BACK SEAT. I have never thought of having cushions in the car before, but now I feel like I need to make some. Tom pretends he doesn't like cushions and blankets, but he's always the one using them to have a nap on the sofa :p xxx

    1. I know, why is it always the things men moan about that they secretly enjoy!? I've never thought about cushions in the car either but it would definitely make some car journeys a lot more comfortable and much more fun! :-) xxx

  2. I have a similar cushion squabble with my boyfriend, apparently all the cushions turn my 3 seater sofa into a 1 seater!

    1. They just don't seem to understand do they? I keep saying to Andrew he can always move the cushions over but he still doesn't get it :-) xx

  3. I really like your themed posts, like the 52 lists thing (forgive me, I didn't comment because I usually read it on my phone. This is a good one. I love cushions too and my husband says exactly the same as your bloke!
I am also type 2 with babies. I am not at all maternal. The leader of my orchestra in Herefordshire this weekend has a cute baby boy and he is one of the few babies that smiles at me. I grinned at him and then got him put on my knee and I went into panic mode (ahjrgh, I don't know how to hold babies!)
    Anyway, fun post. x

  4. Crafting - particularly cross stitching would certainly be on my list. My mam taught me when I was about 5 and had chicken pox as a way to stop me from itching! Otherwise crocheting and cats would have to be on there too!

    1. I like the chicken pox distraction idea - you're mum's certainly got the right idea! At uni I used to use cross stitching as a way to stop eating junk food! :-) xx

  5. I am type 2 with babies, and I am a mother. I'm not very maternal to other people's children at all, like I'll do anything for my little boy but ask me to change another baby's bum (family member or not) you're having a laugh! It kind of surprises me that I'm this way when I have such love and affection for my little one, but each to their own eh.

This is such a great post idea. Also, I really like your blog!

    1. Aww thanks Jade! I used to think I was weird about the whole baby thing until I was told about the two types about 10 years ago - now I know there's loads of us like that and it's perfectly normal! :-) xx

  6. I think the cushion argument is as old as time and definitely a man/woman thing. I'd have the husband on my list, he's a 'c' and probably the children thing, I too am a type two - lots of us around I think.

    1. I agree, there's more of us than you first think! It's probably more common to be type 2, just that people don't seem to mention it! :-) xx
