A Photo Every Hour- Saturday 22nd March 2025

March's photo an hour date was Saturday 22nd. My dad's funeral had been the day before so we had family around from various locations north and south. It wasn't too bad a day weather-wise so we decided on an afternoon stroll along Clevedon seafront, taking in some ice cream, cake and playgrounds.

A Photo Every Hour - Saturday 15th February 2025

Saturday 15th was the date chosen for February's photo an hour. My Mum's birthday would have been the week before so we thought it might be nice to remember her by taking a trip to one of her (and our) favourite seaside spots - Teignmouth in Devon. The day started off a bit rainy and grey but by the time we'd headed down the motorway, it brightened up and the sun started to shine!

A Photo Every Hour - Saturday 18th January 2025

Saturday 18th January was the first photo an hour date of 2025. We headed out on a day trip for Lily's birthday (which was the following week). She'd requested a local drive thru cafe for breakfast and a visit to the New Forest to see the ponies for the afternoon. We finished the day with a stroll on Bournemouth beach and fish & chip dinner.

A Photo Every Hour - Saturday 20th April 2024

April's photo an hour day was on Saturday 20th. If you follow me on Instagram, you might have seen that my Mum died on 11th April after both a long illness (a stage 4 cancer diagnosis in 2019) and a short illness (swelling from brain tumours). It was also mine and Andrew's 17th wedding anniversary on 21st April so we thought Saturday 20th would be a good day for a trip to the seaside to both remember my Mum and celebrate 17 years of putting up with each other. We chose Teignmouth in Devon - one of my Mum's favourite seaside towns.

A Photo Every Hour - Saturday 20th January 2024

Saturday 20th was the first Photo an Hour day of 2024! We'd promised Lily a day trip for her birthday (which was the next week) and she picked Barry Island as the destination. We didn't quite expect it to be so cold though! Although we still managed to see the funfair, have some ice cream, find some playgrounds and finish the day with fish & chips.

Winter at the Duckpond

Not entirely sure how we're in February already but here we are. I've seen some daffodils and snowdrops and I'm writing this in the sunshine so fingers crossed spring is on its way :-)

A lot seems to have happened in the last few months!

  • Carnival season took place properly for the first time since 2019. We went to watch some of the smaller ones in September and October and then during the big carnival season in November, both me and Lily took part in the processions with our carnival club. Our club had decided to take part with a walking entry rather than a cart and we wore our 'Alice in Wonderland' costumes from 2018. It was good fun and great opportunity for the children of the club to take part. Lily was going to be one of the Alices and I made her costume for her. We really enjoyed it but oh my gosh, it was busy! In all the years I've been taking part in carnivals, I've never seen the crowds so big. Which is good, of course - more people in theory means more people know about the processions and therefore more money for charity. A team from Bridgwater Carnival created a cart to take part in the Queen's Platinum Jubilee last year and I think the publicity worked!

  • Good TV we've watched - 'Mayflies' on BBC iPlayer was excellent, heart-breaking but very well acted and put together. We also watched 'The Light in the Hall' on C4 which was also really good. And we've been enjoying 'Call the Midwife' as well (as we do every year).

  • I didn't complete my GoodReads challenge for 2022 :-( After going well over my target in 2021 (target of 52, total read 70), last year's target was 52 and I didn't quite reach it, reading 47. Still a good amount though I think.

  • I had my 40th birthday back in December. We had a day out in Weymouth for my birthday, playing on the beach, getting a hot chocolate and ending the day with a festive chip supper from our favourite chip shop

  • We also went to Edinburgh for Hogmanay - something I'd mentioned could be my 40th birthday present many years ago. We stayed in a lovely caravan at Mortonhall Park and managed to visit lots of our favourite places over the week. One bonus was the fact that I had to work on the Tuesday of the week but of course, the 'home' in "working from home" doesn't have to be your normal residence! So I had a nice day working from our caravan with a lovely view and a roaring fire. For New Year's Eve, we didn't want to be in the centre of Edinburgh (too busy with Covid still rampant, plus we couldn't take Lily) so we ended up on the seafront at Portobello watching the fireworks and saying 'Happy New Year' to the locals who were also out watching the displays. It was lovely.

  • Lily also turned 7 - which is part , "7, wow amazing" but also part, "7, how?". She picked a birthday day trip to the seaside to do one specific activity - play Jurassic Adventure Golf in Teignmouth, Devon. I think she enjoyed it!

  • Photo an hour round up for the last few months can be found here - October, November, December and January. Feburary's photo an hour date is Saturday 18th, feel free to join in if you want to.

  • Oh and yeah, I was diagnosed with suspected kidney cancer. A week before my 40th birthday - which was not exactly the best birthday present ever. 'Twas only found because the GP ordered an MRI scan to do extra investigations into the high blood pressure I've had for years (it seems to run in my Dad's side of the family). Thankfully it doesn't seem to have spread anywhere which is good. The plan is to do a radical nephrectomy operation to remove the offending kidney and tumour so that's how the first half of 2023 is going to pan out for me. It's also going to involve lots of hot chocolates as that's the treat I give myself after every hospital appointment :-)

Anyway, how was your winter/Christmas/New Year?

A Photo Every Hour - Saturday 21st January 2023

The first photo an hour for 2023 took place on Saturday 21st January. The Small Person had requested a couple of birthday day trips and that Saturday was the first one. She had chosen to go to Teignmouth in Devon because she really wanted to play Jurassic Adventure Golf on the seafront :-D

Summer at the Duckpond

So, how is it October already!? Where has this year gone?

We had quite a nice summer, pretty good weather and we managed to get out and about a fair few times plus do our annual road trip to Scotland and back.

Here's a selection of what's been happening over the last three months:

  • We spent lots of time at one of our local outdoor swimming pools, Greenbank Pool in Street. We cancelled the Small Person's swimming lessons (doing them indoors was too high risk) so instead I attempted to teach her myself. Each time we went to the pool, we were able to spend several hours there, mixing swimming and playing in the kids pool with some snacks and a cuppa for me at the poolside. I wouldn't say she was able to swim perfectly but by the end of the summer, she could do breast stroke under the water, glide and do doggy paddle (and a bit of breast stroke) on top of the water so I reckon that's a win. We'll pick it up again next year when the pool opens for the season in May.

  • We had a great road trip to Scotland, visiting the Helensburgh area in the first week and staying in Cramond, Edinburgh in the second week. We took my Mum and brother with us this year and hired a van so we could all fit in. We didn't see any shows at the Fringe (again, we didn't want to take the risk) but we did visit Edinburgh city centre to experience the atmosphere and watch some of the street performers.

  • We went to visit Carters Steam Fair on their Farewell Tour a few times in Bath and also once in Basingstoke. It's sad they're no longer going to tour but also completely understandable as to why they've made that decision. We had great fun working for them and visiting them on lots of occassions so we'll keep lots of happy memories.

  • Andrew took his 1952 Scammell lorry to the Great Dorset Steam Fair (for the first time since 2019). We camped in our usual place (behind the Freak Show) and when everyone had left at the end of the fair, Lily was able to go onto the stage and pretend to put on a performance.

  • We went up to the north of Scotland at the beginning of September, staying near Lossiemouth. It was a holiday originally booked by my Dad for 2021 but I had to postpone it when he had his stroke. We were finally able to go this year and spent lots of time on the beach when we had sunny weather!

  • Carnivals are back this year, after being cancelled in 2020 and 2021. Lots of carnival clubs are smaller; it's been a hard few years for obvious reasons but people still seem to be enjoying it and it's fun to be back. The carnival club I'm in are taking part as a walking group, re-doing our Alice in Wonderland theme from a few years ago. My costume is the White Queen and Lily is able to take part with us on some of the nights, wearing an Alice costume. The big carnivals start on 5th November at Bridgwater and run through to 19th November finishing at Glastonbury (which is also a 'photo an hour' day!). I'm going to try and post on Instagram Stories over the season.

  • Photo an Hour over the summer took place on 23rd July (round-up here), 20th August (round-up here) and 17th September (round-up here). October's photo an hour is this Saturday, the 22nd!

  • We've all had our jabs for the winter - COVID boosters and flu jabs (being eligible as 'carers' and 'household contact of immunosuppressed'). We also made the decision to get Lily her chicken pox vaccine - she still hadn't had chicken pox yet and we just thought what's the point?, the older she gets, the more horrible it'll be. And she wanted it as well so we got her booked in.

  • We watched 'The Sparks Brothers' on Netflix which was utterly wonderful. I tweeted about it the next day and had a like and retweet from its director, Edgar Wright! It's been taken off Netflix now unfortunately but I think you can still find it on other platforms.

What have you been up to?

March and April at the Duckpond

A two month round up this time, mainly because a proportion of 'March and April' were actually spent *not* at the duckpond.

  • At the beginning of April we had a mini weekend break to Cornwall, staying with my sister in law who lives down there. We had great weather and even though it was the first weekend of the school holidays, it wasn't too busy! And the reason we were in Cornwall was to see...

  • Hetty Feather at the Minack Theatre - which was a fabulous show with great acting from the whole cast. It was a nice evening, not too cold and we took along blankets anyway. Lily loved the outdoor setting of the theatre I think!

  • We managed to get both my Mum and Lily up to date with their COVID vaccinations. My Mum was due her 5th one (due to being immunosuppressed) and Lily was due her 2nd. We found a walk in clinic open to children whilst on holiday over Easter and they were more than happy to see us.

  • Easter was spent in Anglesey in North Wales, at the same holiday park we've been to every year since 1987 (minus 2020 and 2021 of course). It was a bit different this year with my Dad not being able to come but we still had fun. Lots of ice creams were eaten, beaches were played on and geocaches were found. We did a mini Easter egg hunt in our chalet for Lily too and amazingly, she still has chocolate eggs left even now!

  • Whilst on holiday too, me and Andrew had our 15th wedding anniversary. Not quite sure how it's been so many years; I remember making a card and present for my parent's 15th wedding anniversary back in 1991 so that's a bit surreal.

  • My Dad's finally out of hospital and has been moved to his new home, a nursing home close to where he used to live. Luckily it's not too far for me and my Mum to visit either.

  • TV and film - we haven't managed to watch much TV recently although I did see that Edgar Wright's 'The Sparks Brothers' film is now on Netflix so we're looking forward to seeing that at some point. I did watch a great talk from last year on YouTube by Bellingcat founder, Eliot Higgins all about how they tracked down the Skripal's poisioners. Open source investigation is something that interests me so I found it fascinating. I'm pleased that the Great British Sewing Bee is back on again too!

  • Music - I'm looking forward to Arcade Fire's new album, out on May 6th (I've had 'The Lightning' on repeat since it was released) and I spotted Muse also have a new album out later in the year too.

  • Our Geocaching Instagram account seems to be going quite well, lots of people seem to like our photos and I think it encourages us to get out more. Or perhaps it's just because we tend to do more caching whilst on holiday.

  • We had an excellent day trip to Lyme Regis back in March, somewhere Lily's wanted to visit for ages as she loves dinaosaurs and knows all about Mary Anning. We did a bit of fossil hunting but didn't find anything too interesting. We will have to return and have another search sometime!

  • April's Photo an Hour took place on Saturday 23rd - we were driving back from Anglesey that day so a few hours of pictures were missed. Just after Easter, I also did a round up of all the lovely people who've taken part in photo an hour over the last year. May's photo an hour date is Saturday 21st - feel free to join in if you want.

February at the Duckpond

So now we're into March, officially Spring!

February was a bit wet and windy down here although there were a few sunny days thrown in. Here's what we got up to...

  • We had a lovely (if blustery) day trip to Teignmouth in Devon as a "mystery tour" present for my Mum's birthday a couple of weeks earlier. We had blue skies all day and managed to fit in a car picnic, a playground, hot chocolate, ice cream, a stroll along the prom, geocaching and fish & chips for supper.

  • My Dad's still waiting for a nursing home place but in the meantime he's staying at the local hospital (which kind of makes it sound like he's choosing to be there when actually it's all paperwork hold-ups!). At least he's closer to our home and we've been able to go in and visit most days.

  • Good film and TV we've watched - wow, the last 2 episodes of 'Call the Midwife' were a bit of a rollercoaster weren't they? Very good though. 'This Is Going to Hurt' was excellent, as I thought it would be (having read all of Adam Kay's books) although it did leave me wondering whether there'd be a second series. A bit like my mamoth 'to be read' list, we also have a long 'to be watched' list - and it doesn't help that Netflix keep releasing things which sound great! I think we're going to watch 'The Lost Daughter' and 'The Responder' (on BBC) next. I also spotted this list from the BFI - 100 Best Films Streaming on Netflix and Amazon Prime - which is brilliant but means we now have even more things to watch :-)

  • Lily was ever so excited to be able to get her first COVID vaccination (due to living in the same household as someone immunosuppressed). Once the doctor's surgery had added the neccessary code to her record, we were able to go to a walk-in vaccination centre to have her jab. Our nearest centre doing 5-11 year olds was Exeter so we packed a picnic and had a morning outing down there. The staff were happy to see her; they'd just decorated the floor with chalk pictures for children and she was the first one to see them all!

  • Just because I clearly need another thing on my to-do list {laughs hysterically}, we started an Instagram account for our geocaching adventures - familyduckadventures (which is our geocaching name). Mainly beacause I often take pictures of the caches we've found but don't share them on my own Instagram account as I'm aware that not everyone is interested in it. Feel free to follow if you think it might be your sort of thing :-)

  • I've just finishing reading Josh Widdicombe's 'Watching Neighbours Twice a Day' book which is very funny and worth reading if you did any growing up in the 1990's.

  • I noticed the Minack Theatre in Cornwall put their summer shows on sale and managed to book tickets for 'Hetty Feather' in April and 'Calvino Nights' in May. Both look excellent - Hetty Feather I saw a few years ago and Calvino Nights is presented by Mike Shepherd who founded Kneehigh so should be fab. And the theatre has the added bonus of being outside so much safer COVID-wise.

  • And speaking of COVID, I can't say I'm that keen on this 'brave new COVID world' (with apologies to Aldous Huxley). Less/no testing plus not having to isolate when positive means that potentially every person you meet *could* be infectious - as there's just no way to tell. So what that means for us is that we do even less than we did pre-COVID (or even back when the COVID rates were low) - ie. we're not spending money on anything indoors like cafes, shops, soft plays, etc. So when journalists and others go on about the economy, well we're another family that won't be contributing to that. Ironically when the rates were low, that's when we did take a chance (in an FFP3 mask) to buy things from indoor places. There's two reasons: 1) there's an immunosuppressed person in our household but more importantly 2) none of us actually want to get COVID. And we've been incredibly lucky so far that none of us have (knowingly) had COVID - and I say knowingly as none of us have ever had a positive test or been told that we've been a contact. And that's with regular lateral flows and regular PCR's for my mum due to her hospital treatment. Although I do completely understand that we're in an incredibly privileged position; I really feel for people who have no choice to be in a place where they may catch COVID. I guess it's the whole 'learning to live with COVID' thing - it kind of implies that some *learning* has actually taken place (ie. putting in place things like HEPA filters, monitoring CO2 levels, maybe implementing masks when needed, etc) but like many things, I'm not so sure the government (and some people in society) have learnt anything. Anyway, grrr.

  • But back to nicer things, there's daffodils, snowdrops and lots of crocuses plus it's lighter past half 5 now - spring (and summer) is hopefully on it's way!
